Indoor Air Quality Orlando FL

In a climate where houses are sealed up and air conditioned for most of the year, indoor air quality is largely an HVAC question: what the system filters, how much moisture it removes, how much outdoor air enters, and what condition the ducts are in.

This page explains the mechanical options and what each one actually does. We do not make health or medical claims about air quality equipment.

Filtration

Filters are rated by MERV. Low-MERV fiberglass filters protect equipment but capture little fine dust. Mid-range pleated filters (roughly MERV 8–11) capture noticeably more without excessive resistance in most residential systems. Higher-MERV filters capture more still, but only work well when the system and filter housing are designed for the added pressure drop.

Fitting a very restrictive filter into an undersized one-inch slot is a common mistake here: airflow drops, capacity and dehumidification suffer, and the coil can freeze. A deeper media cabinet (4–5 inches) is usually the better route to higher filtration because it provides more surface area at lower resistance.

Humidity — the Central Florida factor

Indoor relative humidity generally belongs in the 45–55% range. Above roughly 60% the house feels clammy at any temperature and conditions favour mold and dust mites; well below 40% is rare here outside of winter.

Air conditioners dehumidify as a by-product of cooling, so run time drives moisture removal. Oversized equipment, short cycles, leaking return ducts pulling humid attic air, and running the fan continuously in AUTO's place all undermine it. Where cooling alone cannot hold humidity — shaded homes, mild shoulder seasons, well-insulated new construction — a whole-house dehumidifier tied into the duct system is the direct solution.

Ventilation and pressure

Newer, tighter homes may need controlled fresh-air ventilation, which must be introduced in a way that does not simply dump hot, humid outdoor air into the return. Older homes typically have plenty of unintentional infiltration and often need air sealing more than ventilation.

House pressure matters too. Large exhaust fans, closed interior doors without return paths, and leaky return ducts in the attic all pull unconditioned air into the house from places you would not choose.

Duct condition and coil cleanliness

A duct system with open joints, disconnected runs or crushed flex is drawing and delivering attic air. That affects dust levels, humidity and energy use simultaneously, and sealing it usually does more for air quality than any add-on device.

Evaporator coils and drain pans stay wet through most of the year here. Biological growth on a dirty coil is a real air-quality issue and a capacity problem at the same time, which is why coil condition is part of any serious IAQ evaluation.

Air purification options

  • Media air cleaners

    Deep pleated filters in a dedicated cabinet. Reliable, passive, straightforward maintenance.

  • UV-C lamps

    Typically installed to keep the coil and drain pan surfaces clean. Their effect on air passing through in a fraction of a second is far more limited than marketing often suggests.

  • Electronic and polarized-media cleaners

    Can improve fine-particle capture; require regular maintenance to keep working as intended.

  • Whole-house dehumidifiers

    The most effective mechanical answer to persistent indoor humidity in this climate.

  • Portable HEPA units

    Useful for a specific room; they do not address duct, humidity or system-wide issues.

A sensible order of work

Start with the fundamentals: correct filtration for the system, verified airflow, a clean coil and drain, sealed ducts and controlled humidity. Add equipment only where a specific, identified problem remains. Devices layered onto a leaky, restricted, humid system rarely deliver what the box promises.

Roughly 45–55% relative humidity. Above about 60% the house feels damp regardless of temperature and conditions favour mold growth.

Will a higher MERV filter hurt my system?

Do UV lights clean the air in my house?

UV-C lamps are most useful for keeping coil and drain-pan surfaces clean. Air passing the lamp is exposed only briefly, so treat whole-house air disinfection claims with caution.

Should I have my ducts cleaned?

Duct cleaning is warranted after construction, contamination, or visible debris. For general air quality, sealing leaks and correcting filtration and humidity usually produce a bigger, longer-lasting difference.
