A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse, so it carries every cooling failure mode plus a set of its own: the reversing valve that switches modes, the defrost control that clears frost from the outdoor coil, and the auxiliary heat that supplements it in cold weather.

Because heat pumps in Orlando run nearly year-round — heavy cooling for most of the year and modest heating in winter — they accumulate run hours quickly, and small faults tend to surface as either a comfort complaint or an unexpected power bill.

Heat-pump-specific symptoms

  • Cools fine but will not heat (or vice versa)

    A classic reversing-valve or valve-solenoid symptom. The control signal, the solenoid coil and the valve itself all need to be checked before condemning the valve.

  • Outdoor unit stays iced over

    Brief frosting is normal in cold, humid weather; the defrost cycle clears it. Persistent ice points to a defrost board, defrost sensor, low charge or airflow problem.

  • Loud whoosh when switching modes

The diagnostic sequence

Verify the thermostat type and configuration first — a heat pump wired or configured as a conventional system produces convincing hardware-like symptoms. Then check airflow and filter condition, confirm the outdoor unit energizes in both modes, observe reversing valve operation, force or observe a defrost cycle where relevant, and measure refrigerant-side performance in the mode that is failing.

Measurements must be taken in the failing mode. A heat pump can read acceptably in cooling and still perform poorly in heating, because the coils swap roles and metering behaves differently.

Wear factors in this climate

Salt-laden and humid outdoor air accelerates coil and cabinet corrosion. Lawn debris, pollen and mulch packed against the coil restrict airflow. Frequent afternoon storms cause voltage disturbances that are hard on contactors and capacitors, and a compressor starting under high head pressure suffers for it.

Keeping the outdoor coil clean and clear, and correcting failing electrical components early, does more to extend heat pump life here than anything else.

Repair versus replacement

Reversing valves, defrost boards, sensors, capacitors and contactors are ordinary repairs on a system in reasonable condition. Compressor replacement, a leaking outdoor coil, or a system on a discontinued refrigerant changes the calculation, particularly past twelve years of service.
