Cooling & AC Problems
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
The most common causes are a failed run capacitor stopping the compressor, a tripped breaker or disconnect at the outdoor unit, low refrigerant charge from a leak, a frozen evaporator coil, or a control failure. If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit is silent, the fault is usually electrical at the condenser.
Why is my AC not cooling enough on hot afternoons?
A system can hold temperature in the morning and fall behind at peak load when capacity is marginal — a dirty condenser coil, restricted airflow, a slightly low charge, or leaking attic ducts. Load is highest when the attic is hottest, which is exactly when duct losses peak.
Why does my AC short cycle?
Short cycling comes from a thermostat placed in a hot or drafty spot, a dirty condenser raising head pressure until a safety trips, a refrigerant charge problem, or equipment oversized for the house.
Why is my evaporator coil freezing?
Ice forms when the coil runs below freezing, which happens with low airflow (dirty filter, blocked returns, weak blower, dirty coil) or low refrigerant charge. Turn cooling off, run the fan to thaw, then have the cause found — running it iced can damage the compressor.
Why is my AC making a loud noise?
Screeching or grinding often points at a motor bearing, buzzing at a contactor or electrical fault, rattling at loose panels or debris in the condenser, and a hard clunk at startup can indicate compressor or mounting problems. Persistent electrical buzzing should be looked at promptly.
Why does my AC smell musty?
A musty smell usually means moisture sitting in the system: a dirty evaporator coil, a drain pan that is not draining, wet duct insulation, or a filter that has stayed in too long in humid conditions.
Why is my AC running constantly?
Continuous running on the hottest days can be normal for a correctly sized system. It becomes a problem when the house does not reach setpoint — then it points to charge, airflow, coil condition, duct leakage or insufficient capacity.
Humidity & Comfort
Why is my house humid when the AC is running?
Dehumidification depends on run time at the coil. Oversized equipment cools fast and shuts off before removing moisture; the fan set to ON re-evaporates condensate back into the airstream; leaking return ducts pull humid attic air into the system.
Should my thermostat fan be on AUTO or ON?
AUTO in almost all Florida cases. With the fan on ON, air keeps moving across a wet coil after the compressor stops, putting moisture back into the house.
What indoor humidity level should I target in Orlando?
Roughly 45–55% relative humidity is comfortable and manageable here. Above about 60% the house feels clammy at any temperature and moisture problems become more likely.
Can an oversized AC cause problems?
Yes — it is one of the most common comfort complaints in Florida. Oversized systems satisfy the thermostat quickly, cycle frequently, dehumidify poorly and wear components faster.
Will a dehumidifier help?
It can, but the sequence matters: correct airflow, duct leakage, fan settings and charge first. Whole-home dehumidification is a legitimate solution once the system itself is operating properly.
Maintenance & Upkeep
How often should I change my air filter?
In Orlando, check monthly. One-inch filters commonly need replacement every 30–60 days during heavy cooling months; thicker media filters last longer. Pets, construction dust and heavy run time shorten the interval.
How often should HVAC systems be serviced here?
Twice a year suits most systems given the length of the cooling season, with annual service as the practical minimum. Condensate drains benefit from attention more often than that.
What causes AC drain line clogs?
Biological growth in warm, humid condensate, plus dust drawn into the pan. Long horizontal runs, poor slope and dry or missing traps make it worse. A clog trips the float switch and shuts the system down — or overflows.
Can I clean my own condenser coil?
You can safely keep clearance around the unit, remove leaves and clippings, and rinse the fins gently with a garden hose from the inside out after cutting power at the disconnect. Do not use a pressure washer, and do not open electrical compartments.
Why does my system need clearance around the outdoor unit?
The condenser rejects heat by pulling large volumes of air through its coil. Fences, shrubs and stacked items restrict that airflow, raise operating pressure and shorten equipment life. Keep roughly two feet clear on all sides and open space above.
Does maintenance actually extend equipment life?
It addresses the specific failure paths that dominate here — condensate clogs, airflow restriction, dirty coils, loose electrical connections and drifting charge. Catching those early prevents secondary damage; it cannot make a system last forever.
Installation & Replacement
How long do HVAC systems last in Orlando?
Many systems reach the end of their practical life between 10 and 15 years because of high run hours, humidity and outdoor exposure. Installation quality and maintenance both move that range.
What size system does my home need?
Sizing should come from a load calculation using square footage, orientation, windows, insulation, ceiling height, duct location and infiltration — not from matching the outgoing unit, which may have been wrong.
What is SEER2 and how much does it matter?
SEER2 is the current cooling efficiency rating, measured under conditions closer to real installed systems. Because Orlando systems run so many hours, efficiency differences show up on bills faster here than in cooler climates.
Should I choose a heat pump or straight-cool system?
Heat pumps suit this climate well: mild winters keep them in their efficient range, and one system handles both seasons. Straight-cool with electric heat remains common; the right choice depends on existing equipment, wiring and controls.
Do I need new ductwork with a new system?
Not always, but the ducts need evaluation. Systems sized for older equipment often cannot carry the airflow new equipment needs, and attic leakage wastes capacity continuously.
Is a permit required for HVAC replacement in Orlando?
Equipment replacement is permitted work in the Orlando area, with inspection covering electrical, condensate, safety switches and installation practice. Permitted work protects you at resale as well as at installation.
How long does an HVAC installation take?
A straightforward same-configuration changeout is commonly a single day. Duct modifications, electrical upgrades, difficult attic access or multiple systems extend that.
Heating & Heat Pumps
Do I really need heating in Orlando?
Yes, though demand is modest. Central Florida sees cold fronts and occasional near-freezing nights, and the heat side often sits unused for months — which is exactly why failures show up on the first cold night.
Why does my heat pump blow cool air in heating mode?
Heat pump supply air is cooler than furnace air by nature — often in the 90s °F — so it can feel cool while working correctly. It becomes a fault when the house will not reach setpoint or the reversing valve or defrost cycle is malfunctioning.
What is auxiliary or emergency heat?
Electric resistance heat strips that supplement the heat pump when it cannot keep up, or replace it if the compressor fails. They use considerably more electricity, so a bill spike in winter often means aux heat is running more than it should.
Why does my heater smell like burning when it first runs?
Dust burning off heat strips or a heat exchanger after months idle usually clears within a cycle or two. A persistent burning or electrical smell should be treated as a reason to shut the system off and call.
Indoor Air Quality
What kind of air filter should I use?
A filter with enough surface area for your blower to handle. A high-MERV one-inch filter in an undersized return can restrict airflow enough to hurt performance; a thicker media cabinet usually offers better filtration at lower resistance.
Do UV lights and air purifiers work?
Some devices have measurable effects on specific contaminants under specific conditions. We describe what a device does and does not do rather than making health claims, and we generally address filtration, humidity, ventilation and duct condition first.
Why is there dust coming from my vents?
Commonly return-side leakage pulling attic or wall-cavity dust into the system, a bypassing filter, or deteriorating duct liner. Finding the entry point matters more than cleaning the symptom.
Should I have my ducts cleaned?
Duct cleaning helps in specific situations — visible contamination, post-construction debris, rodent activity. It is not a general fix for dust or allergy complaints, and it does nothing for leaks or undersized returns.

What should I do before the technician arrives?
Note what the system is doing and when it started, clear access to the indoor and outdoor equipment, secure pets, and have the thermostat accessible. If water is present near electrical components, switch the system off.
Should I turn my system off if it is not cooling?
If the coil is iced, water is present around electrical parts, or you smell burning, switch it off. A system that runs but underperforms can usually stay on until it is looked at.
